Weather, Course Safety & Cancellation Policy

Riding in the Canadian Rockies

Gran Fondo Jasper takes place in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, where mountain weather can change quickly and unexpectedly.

The event proceeds rain, snow, or shine, provided conditions remain safe for cycling.

All participants should arrive prepared for cool temperatures, rain, wind, and rapidly changing weather. Riders are responsible for monitoring forecasts and bringing appropriate clothing and equipment.

Participant safety is our highest priority. MultiSportsCanada reserves the right to delay, modify, shorten, reroute, or cancel any portion of the event if conditions present an unacceptable safety risk.

1. Weather Monitoring & Event Decisions

Weather forecasts, road conditions, and course safety will be monitored before and throughout the event.

The Event Director will make operational decisions in consultation with Parks Canada, medical personnel, course safety teams, and local authorities as required.

Depending on conditions, the event may:

  • Proceed as scheduled

  • Delay the start

  • Modify or shorten a route

  • Remove hazardous sections

  • Combine or substitute distances

  • Cancel part or all of the event

Important: Final decisions may be made as late as event morning or during the event as mountain conditions evolve.

2. Cold Weather, Snow & Ice

Particular attention will be given to higher elevations, exposed sections, and long descents.

Conditions that may require modifications include:

  • Freezing rain or icy road surfaces

  • Snow accumulation affecting traction

  • Temperatures near 0°C combined with rain or wind

  • Increased risk of hypothermia

  • Unsafe conditions for riders or event support personnel

Cool or wet weather alone does not automatically result in cancellation. The event may proceed when road conditions remain suitable for safe cycling.

Recommended rider equipment:

  • Waterproof cycling jacket

  • Warm, moisture-wicking layers

  • Full-finger cycling gloves

  • Weather-appropriate cycling clothing

3. Wind, Thunderstorms & Severe Weather

The event may be delayed, shortened, rerouted, or cancelled in response to:

  • Lightning or severe thunderstorms

  • High winds affecting bicycle handling

  • Falling trees, debris, or other road hazards

  • Reduced visibility

  • Unsafe road or travel conditions

4. Modified Routes & Alternate Distances

Where possible, MultiSportsCanada will prioritize modifying the event rather than cancelling it entirely.

Depending on conditions, alternatives may include:

  • Removing the Marmot Hill Climb

  • Shortening the Gran Fondo to the Medio distance

  • Combining routes into a shorter course, such as the Piccolo

  • Removing specific hazardous course sections

When feasible, participants will still receive event timing, finisher items, and post-event services.

Route modifications may be announced before the start or implemented while the event is underway.

5. Refunds, Credits & Event Cancellation

Organizing Gran Fondo Jasper requires substantial advance financial commitments, including Parks Canada permits, road approvals, insurance, medical support, traffic management, participant merchandise, medals, food, and event supplies.

If the event is delayed, modified, shortened, rerouted, or cancelled due to severe weather, unsafe road conditions, road closures, or other circumstances outside the organizer’s control:

No refunds, credits, or transfers to future editions will be provided.

If the event is cancelled, registered participants will receive instructions regarding collection or delivery of included event merchandise.
