Air Quality & Event Cancellation Policy
This policy has been developed by Triathlon Alberta and Triathlon BC, and is adopted by MultiSportsCanada to guide decisions when the Field of Play is affected by low visibility or wildfire smoke.
Full details on the official Triathlon protocol can be found here.
Monitoring Air Quality
We use real-time reporting from the Government of Alberta Air Quality Monitoring Map:
If the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) reaches a level of 7 or higher, the event will be cancelled.
Participants will receive an update 72 hours before the event with the current AQHI reading.
Because air conditions can change quickly, a final decision will be made on the morning of the event.
A current forecast map will be shared on our website and social channels.
Refunds & Credits
By the time air-quality conditions are assessed, all major costs are already committed — including permits, medals, cycling gear, post-event meals, and merchandise.
For this reason, no refunds, credits, or rollovers will be available in the event of cancellation.
If the event is cancelled due to air quality:
All event merchandise (jersey, medal, gear) will be mailed to registered participants.
Registered athletes will retain access to sponsor discounts and future-event priority registration.
