Weather Safety Protocol
Gran Fondo Jasper takes place in the Canadian Rockies, where weather conditions can change quickly. Participant safety is our highest priority while recognizing that outdoor endurance events involve variable and unpredictable conditions.
The event is scheduled to proceed rain, snow, or shine, and riders should arrive prepared for changing mountain weather, including cool temperatures, rain, wind, and sudden weather changes.
Participants are responsible for monitoring the forecast and arriving with appropriate equipment and clothing for the conditions.
MultiSportsCanada reserves the right to modify, delay, shorten, reroute, or cancel any portion of the event if conditions create an unacceptable safety risk for participants, volunteers, staff, or support teams.
Decision Process
Weather and course conditions will be monitored leading up to and during the event.
The Event Director, in consultation with:
- Parks Canada
- Event medical personnel
- Road/course safety teams
- Local authorities (where required)
will determine whether the event:
- Proceeds as planned
- Has a delayed start
- Moves to a modified route
- Removes specific course sections
- Uses alternate distances
- Is cancelled
A final assessment may occur up to and including event morning, recognizing mountain conditions can change rapidly.
Cold / Snow / Ice Conditions
Special consideration will be given to higher elevation sections, long descents, and areas where rider exposure is increased.
The event may be modified if conditions include:
- Freezing rain
- Ice accumulation on road surfaces
- Snow accumulation impacting safe cycling
- Temperatures near 0°C combined with precipitation and/or wind creating increased hypothermia risk
- Unsafe conditions for volunteers, medical personnel, support vehicles, or participants
Note: Cool temperatures alone do not automatically result in cancellation. Mountain cycling events commonly continue in cool or wet conditions when roads remain safe.
Participants should be prepared with:
- Rain protection
- Warm layers
- Gloves
- Weather-appropriate cycling gear
Wind / Storm Conditions
The event may be delayed, modified, shortened, or cancelled due to:
- Severe thunderstorms
- Lightning risk
- Extreme wind affecting rider control
- Falling trees or debris hazards
- Unsafe road conditions
- Reduced visibility
Alternate Course Options
If conditions impact specific sections of the route, the event may use an alternate format, including:
- Removing the Marmot Hill Climb
- Reducing distances (eg. Gran Fondo downgrades to Medio)
- Combining distances (everyone completes the Piccolo)
Participants will continue to receive:
- Timing (where possible)
- Finisher items
- Post-event services
Refunds & Cancellations
By event week, significant expenses have already been committed, including:
- Parks Canada permits
- Road approvals
- Event insurance
- Medical support
- Traffic management
- Jerseys and merchandise
- Medals
- Food and supplies
If the event is modified or cancelled due to weather, unsafe course conditions, road closures, or other circumstances outside of event control:
No refunds, credits, or rollovers will be issued.
If cancellation occurs, registered participants will receive instructions regarding pickup or delivery of included event merchandise.
